New starter!
August 2024
Joe recently joined the practice having graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a BSc (Hons) in Architecture.
​
Whilst at University, Joe worked on projects which always had the environment in mind and gained a passion for designing high quality residential spaces.
​
Joe enjoys all sports, he played ruby from a young age and is now a keen runner, having run the Sheffield Half Marathon in 2024 and has a season ticket at Lincoln City.
Part Q conversion
June 6 2024
Another Part Q barn conversion submitted on the outskirts of York. Submitted just before the recent changes in policy the scheme looks to create a 4 bed dwelling from an existing agricultural barn located on the outskirts of York. The large openings and large sliding doors are proposed to be retained to maximise the views out over the surrounding landscape.

Barn conversion plans taking shape!

Proposals are being developed for the part conversion and new build for a number of modern barns in the countryside. The scheme looks to create six dwellings, a mixture of 3, 4 and 5 bed dwellings all with large gardens set in a rural landscape. The barns are to be clad in zinc and timber to reflect the rural setting.

A planning application has been submitted for the replacement of an existing bungalow with a new 2 storey dwelling. Set within a former sand quarry the dwelling looks to use a simple palette of charred timber, dark metal cladding and oak to create a dwelling which blends into the densley vegetated site

Full planning consent has been granted for this new build dwelling sited in Green Belt and the grounds of a Grade II Listed farm house.
The clients had recently encountered their own challenges and required a wheelchair accessible family home to be located within their rural farmstead
Work commences on conversion of Grade II listed hospital into apartments

Work has commenced on the conversion of the former Springfield Hospital into approximately 250 apartments as part of a wider scheme to also deliver a new hospital and new build family housing in the heart of London.

Working closely with the developer City & Country Ltd Wighton Architects are now preparing the construction information ready for tender and a full start on start for Phase 1 by the end of the year.

Great meeting with local planner and conservation officer to discuss our proposals for the sympathetic refurbishment and conversion of a series of listed buildings. The buildings are in an extremely poor state of repair and in need of urgent remedial work. The proposals also involve the development of 5 new dwellings as part of enabling development.

New contemporary housing development progressing

Managed to get a great day to get some photos of a scheme we have been working on recently which includes a number of listed buildings and new builds designed to reflect the local vernacular in a contemporary manner.
Our client purchased the site with planning and we have been able to increase the usable floor area and bedroom numbers and create more open, flowing apartments within the listed building elements.

Lake House due to start on site early 2019

Grand designs for a new private house built on the edge of a lake complete with work to commence early 2019. The new dwelling provides living accommodation to the ground floor with bedrooms to the lower water level with the master suite opening out onto its own private terrace with open fire.

The simple open plan at ground level allows panoramic views out from the living, kitchen and dining areas which are zoned by a suspended stone flue over a central feature fire. ​
Finishing touches to Grade II farmhouse extension and full refurbishment

Work is nearing completion on the complete renovation and extension of a Grade II farm house in Huddersfield.
Planning was granted for a new 2 storey side extension clad in Siberian larch with a metal roof and glazed link to contrast with the original stone of the farmhouse.
Full remodel and extension to detached dwelling in North Yorkshire

Work has been completed on the full remodel and extension of a detached dwelling in North Yorkshire. The client purchased the bungalow with an under croft garage and modern side extension with a view to completely overhauling the house to create a modern 4 bedroom house.
Wighton Architects reconfigured the layout creating a new formal entrance to the lower ground floor which opens into a central hall which rises up two further floors via a sculptured staircase connecting the alternate levels.
Planning Application submitted for the refurbishment & extension of a large Victorian villa

The proposals look to fully remodel and refurbish the existing detached stone villa with the addition of a separate swimming pool wing and subterranean garage.

Set within Green Belt land and a local conservation area the proposals have been designed to sit sympathetically within the existing topography. Following a thorough appraisal of the site the designs were developed to minimise the impact on the Green Belt whilst maximising the views out across the valley.
New office and garage linked to Grade II listed barn

Planning has now been submitted for an extension to an existing Grade II listed barn.
The proposals look to create an office, garage and ancillary accommodation linked to an existing set of barns and stables. The designs reflect the rural setting with materials chosen to purposefully contrast with the existing red/orange brick barns accentuating the hierarchy. In addition to the extension plans have also been submitted for the conversion of several attached stables into a self contained 1 bed unit.
Conversion of hospital into luxury apartments

It is always satisfying to see a job that was part of your life for over 7 years in all its glory.
On one of my regular recent visits to our sites located in the south east I decided to pop in and have a look at a project I was the architect on for the best part of 7 years. Involving the conversion of a Grade II listed hospital into luxury apartments along with the addition of several new build blocks the project has won many awards and is testament to how existing historic buildings can be sympathetically converted in order to preserve them.
Wheelchair accessible house completed

Work has been completed on a fully wheelchair accessible dwelling in West Yorkshire.
​
Working closely with the client we developed a number of options which created a dwelling for a growing family that also enabled full wheelchair access throughout.​

Work has finished on our latest conversion of an old warehouse building in North Yorkshire. A full refurbishment has been completed creating a total of six new dwellings across the site.

Victorian Terrace extension and refurbishment

Really looking forward to seeing works progress on a full house refurb we are involved with alongside luxury interior designer @laurastephensid . Full planning achieved within a conservation area for an enlarged basement and new second floor which will create a stunning 5 bed townhouse over 4 floors. The basement has already been excavated with works due for completion by the end of the year.

Full planning consent has been granted for this replacement dwelling. Replacing an existing bungalow with a new 2 storey dwelling! The scheme proposes a replacement dwelling creating a modern and spacious family home where the existing single storey property no longer fits the needs of the client.
Permitted Development?

Permitted Development? Not sure this was a thing 200 years ago when Lea Hall was in its prime having been constructed sometime in the fifteenth and sixteenth century but during current works to restore the Grade II* listed hall a ‘hip to gable’ extension was uncovered amongst the many alterations made over the centuries.
Replacing rotten and missing timbers with new work has been completed on the roof meaning work internally can now progress.

To accommodate our growing team we have relocated to a bright and airy new studio in a converted mill. Sunny Bank Mills is located in Farsley, just to the west of Leeds city centre. The mill is a creative hub with studios, an art gallery and an events area. We are exicited to get settled in.
Contemporary timber clad dwelling, West Yorkshire

Great to see the completion of the full refurbishment of a detached dwelling on the outskirts of Otley, West Yorkshire. Commanding panoramic views over the surrounding countryside the house was completely reworked and clad to create a contemporary dwelling.
External timber cladding and large picture windows ground the dwelling within its context whilst providing far reaching views out. To the rear is a Cor-Ten clad extension which connects the internals with the rear private terrace.

Being based in the heart of Leeds its great to be involved in and see all the large scale commercial development that is going on however it is sometimes the smaller projects, tucked away on the outskirts, which can provide real delight and satisfaction.
We have recently submitted designs for a contemporary extension to a Grade II listed house in Headingley which looks to compliment the listed dwelling.

Planning approval granted for much needed market housing in Yeadon. Wighton Architects working closely with Benson Planning Studio have secured approval for a 6 unit scheme on the site of an existing pub in Yeadon.
Having been appointed following a previously unsuccessful application we worked closely with the local authority in securing a scheme which provides 6 contemporary new dwellings.

We have recently gained planning approval for a new detached dwelling in Green Belt. Having been approached by a client with a site with a previous refusal for a dwelling Wighton Architects were able to develop a scheme which addressed the many constraints and achieve approval.
Planning for replacement dwelling granted under 5 week ‘Fast Track’ service

Wighton Architects have secured planning approval for a replacement dwelling under a new 5 week ‘Fast Track’ service with Barnet LPA. The dwelling replaces an existing property that suffered from subsidence and was in a poor state of repair.
Through an initial pre planning enquiry the support for a larger replacement dwelling was received with the formal approval taking a mere 5 weeks from validation.

A detached dwelling was in desperate need of some TLC! Wighton Architects undertook the full remodel, extension and refurbishment of the property creating a 5 bed dwelling with enclosed courtyard garden and double cart lodge to the rear.
The proposals utilised the existing roof void by incorporating three pitched dormers and extended to the side creating a large kitchen / dining room which opens up to a secluded private garden. Externally the front porch was re-skinned in local handmade bricks with the poor quality render removed and replaced with new painted timber cladding.
Planning granted for new contemporary dwelling in East Hertfordshire

Planning approval has been granted for a new 4 bed detached family dwelling in East Hertfordshire.
Located in Green belt, adjacent a Grade II listed building and outside the village boundary the design replaces a small 2 bed timber cottage previously situated on the site. The proposals were approved at officer level and significantly increase the floor area creating a significant family dwelling whilst also creating additional value for the developer.
