Valley Road Community Primary School, Sunderland

A new two form entry primary school was designed and constructed to replace an existing school which was no longer fit for purpose. Working closely with the Local Authority and the local SES a design was developed that provided an uplifting environment in which to learn and enjoy.

The design included a purpose-built entrance ‘street’ which provided services such as a creche, breakfast club and health facilities. Access to the school is via a secure ‘hub’ off which radiate the ancillary areas and two main learning wings. Each classroom has direct access to the eternal play areas and individual toilet facilities.

The introduction of sweeping forms and colour helped to create a school which looked to improve the quality of life and education received in a very deprived areas of Sunderland.

The project was completed by Stuart Wighton whilst at a previous practice F&M
