Planning approved for a new build dwelling near Keighley
May 20 2021
Full planning consent has been granted for this new build dwelling sited in Green Belt and the grounds of a Grade II Listed farm house.
The clients had recently encountered their own challenges and required a wheelchair accessible family home to be located within their rural farmstead. We worked closely with the clients to develop a scheme which worked practically for their family and responded to the spatial character of the farmstead. The central mass of the house echoes the agricultural form of the stable block which previously occupied the site with the addition of two corten clad ‘wings’ which are tucked behind (and project through) the existing stone boundary walls.

New contemporary housing development progressing
February 15, 2019
Managed to get a great day to get some photos of a scheme we have been working on recently which includes a number of listed buildings and new builds designed to reflect the local vernacular in a contemporary manner.
Our client purchased the site with planning and we have been able to increase the usable floor area and bedroom numbers and create more open, flowing apartments within the listed building elements. We have a number of listed buildings on the drawing board at the moment and really enjoy finding new and sympathetic uses and layouts which accentuate the natural beauty of the historic fabric.
If you are involved with or have a historic building that needs some TLC or restoring then we would love to hear from you and would be happy to discuss how we may be able to assist in developing the next chapter in its history!
Lake House due to start on site early 2019

Grand designs for a new private house built on the edge of a lake complete with work to commence early 2019. The new dwelling provides living accommodation to the ground floor with bedrooms to the lower water level with the master suite opening out onto its own private terrace with open fire.
The simple open plan at ground level allows panoramic views out from the living, kitchen and dining areas which are zoned by a suspended stone flue over a central feature fire. A large glazed screen with sliding doors opens out onto a large terrace with a double sided external fire.
Adjacent the main house is a smaller 3 car garage and boat house which also houses an office / games room set above. Work is due to start on site early 2019.

Work is nearing completion on the complete renovation and extension of a Grade II farm house in Huddersfield.
Planning was granted for a new 2 storey side extension clad in Siberian larch with a metal roof and glazed link to contrast with the original stone of the farmhouse. The larch is specially coated in order to accelerate the ageing process creating a soft grey finish. To further accentuate the new from the old a glazed link at first floor was introduced creating a clear break and providing views out over the surrounding countryside.

Conversion of hospital into luxury apartments
December 01, 2015
It is always satisfying to see a job that was part of your life for over 7 years in all its glory.
On one of my regular recent visits to our sites located in the south east I decided to pop in and have a look at a project I was the architect on for the best part of 7 years. Involving the conversion of a Grade II listed hospital into luxury apartments along with the addition of several new build blocks the project has won many awards and is testament to how existing historic buildings can be sympathetically converted in order to preserve them.

July 23, 2020
Great to see the completion of the full refurbishment of a detached dwelling on the outskirts of Otley, West Yorkshire. Commanding panoramic views over the surrounding countryside the house was completely reworked and clad to create a contemporary dwelling.
External timber cladding and large picture windows ground the dwelling within its context whilst providing far reaching views out. To the rear is a Cor-Ten clad extension which connects the internal living area with the rear private terrace. Internally the decor reflects the client and their love of travelling and the countryside creating a dwelling which not only sits seemlessley in the landscape but also provides a secure home.
Contemporary extension to Grade II listed dwelling
October 09, 2019
Being based in the heart of Leeds its great to be involved in and see all the large scale commercial development that is going on however it is sometimes the smaller projects, tucked away on the outskirts, which can provide real delight and satisfaction.
We have recently submitted designs for a contemporary extension to a Grade II listed house in Headingley which looks to compliment the listed dwelling through its scale and detailing whilst at the same time not being overly dominated by it. The extension has been developed as a light and fragile addition to the dark and heavy listed dwelling reinforcing the contrast between old and new yet still being able to stand up for itself!

200% uplift in land value achieved!
November 29, 2017
Wighton Architects continue their success in achieving planning not only within the Green Belt but on severely compromised sites creating significant uplift in land values for clients.
We have recently gained planning approval for a new detached dwelling in Green Belt. Having been approached by a client with a site with a previous refusal for a dwelling Wighton Architects were able to develop a sympathetic scheme which addressed the many site constraints and achieve approval for a new detached dwelling.
Through detailed negotiations and site appraisal we were able to prepare a robust argument resulting in a delegated approval. The design respects the many trees on site, all covered by a blanket TPO, and reflects the local vernacular creating a large contemporary family dwelling on a secluded plot.

Externally the front porch was re-skinned in local handmade bricks with the poor quality render removed and replaced with new painted timber cladding. More images will be appearing on our website ( www.wightonarchitects.com ) so please follow us to keep up to date with this and many other projects.
